About the Salt Marsh Alliance |
||||
|
The Salt Marsh Alliance, a nor for profit organization, was formed in 2002 to supplement city funding for the Salt Marsh Nature Center. As residents of Marine Park and Gerritsen Beach, we believe that this educational facility, its beautiful nature trails, and its community-oriented events are valuable assets to our neighborhood. In this era of city and state budget cuts, the Salt Marsh Alliance provides a way for private citizens and local businesses to help maintain the Nature Center in a partnership with New York City's Parks and Recreation Department and the Urban Park Rangers. The Nature Center's state of the art educational exhibits and displays require ongoing care, maintenance and security. The grounds, including the one mile loop, must be patrolled for the safety of visitors and nearby residents. Litter must be picked up and , unfortunately, graffiti and vandalism must be repaired. The Salt Marsh Alliance provides items and services as needed, including supplies and labor. The Center opened on Earth Day in April 2000. In addition to a salt marsh, its grounds include upland meadows, waterways, and tidal flats. The open waters of Gerritsen Creek are an important refuge for ducks, geese and other waterfowl. This wetland ecosystem can be viewed from nearly 5 miles of shoreline. Join our effort to maintain stewardship of our creek and wetlands. This is your opportunity to do something truly beneficial to your community. The Salt Marsh Alliance needs you! |
