Other Brooklyn Parks

The Urban Park Rangers would like to remind you that nature supplies our urban animals with all they need for winter survival including food and shelter.
Animals are incredible for adapting to their environment and have survived many winters without our help. Please do not feed the animals! Keep in mind that it is against Park Rules and Regulations and you can be fined.
Did you know that birds migrate primarily for food? And thus, feeding them can disrupt their migration patterns. Contrary to popular belief, bread is not healthy to feed our feathered friends, and left on the ground contributes to the rodent population.

A Message from the Nature Center Coordinator

 Dear All,

Spring is just around the corner and we’re gearing up for great growth and renewal here at the Nature Center. We’ll be sad to see Ranger Marisa Miller head off to supervise the nesting Plovers at Rockaway Beach for the summer.
At the same time, we’re happy to find that Lynn McEvoy has joined our team full time here at the nature center.  Lynn will be designing a whole host of outdoor events, active restoration programs and community outreach events.  We’re lucky she’s here.
We will continue to develop ideas to remodel the Nature Center’s interior. In the meantime, the Salt Marsh Alliance has approved a small expenditure to revamp our animal exhibits and add a few new residents to the marsh.  By the end of the month, we hope to offer a home to a Tiger Salamander and a pair of young horse shoe crabs.  Seedlings for the upcoming restoration of our building’s native plant garden will mature under the grow light fixture that once hung over Smokey the Rabbit.  (Smokey, we’re told, has lost some weight and is doing very well in his new digs).
Visiting Children will have the opportunity to touch Brown Skates and the pre-historic arachnids—don’t worry, they don’t bite or sting.
The landscape of Marine Park is undergoing a major rebirth.
The Army Corps.has begun to dig into the weedy embankments opposite White Island and the once towering field of Phragmites now lies flattened against the earth.  The trail remains closed, but our resolve to restore the natural areas around the nature center is building steadily.
Our gardener volunteers are gearing up to take on the resident invasive weeds and vines.   A meeting to discuss strategy will convene on the 13th.
Despite all the changes, we’ll continue to serve up some old favorites.
The great tradition of our Brooklyn Celebrates Baseball program will continue this month and feature a new star player.  Professor Lee Lowenfish, author of “Branch Rickey: Baseball’s Ferocious Gentleman,” will offer a multi-media presentation about the man who integrated the major leagues by signing Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers.   The Salt Marsh Alliance will offer Hot Dogs and trivia following his talk.
Our Rangers have created an exciting battery of programming that will range from the nature center to the hills of Prospect Park.  We’ll hunt for Easter eggs, track Prospect Park’s wildlife and offer lectures on tidal shifts.  Spring Break’s Kids’ Week should be a major hit as we offer antsy students fun programming twice daily.
Wishing you and yours a tremendous March!

Sincerely,
  Calvin Godfrey
